Insurance FAQ

Plain-language answers to common questions about coverage, quotes, policy structure, and reviews.

Learn the language

Understand the pieces that shape a policy.

Insurance terminology can make a quote harder to compare than it needs to be. These general explanations can help you ask better questions.

Ask Us a Question
What is an insurance deductible?

A deductible is the amount you may be responsible for on a covered property or physical-damage loss before the policy contributes, subject to policy terms. Different coverages can have different deductibles.

What is a liability limit?

A liability limit is the maximum amount the policy will pay for a covered liability claim, subject to the policy structure, exclusions, and aggregate limits where applicable.

What is replacement cost compared with actual cash value?

Replacement cost generally values covered property based on the cost to replace it with new property of like kind and quality, subject to policy terms. Actual cash value generally considers depreciation.

What is an endorsement?

An endorsement changes the standard policy. It can add, remove, broaden, restrict, or otherwise modify coverage. Endorsements are part of the policy contract.

Why does the same coverage cost different amounts with different carriers?

Carriers use different rating models, underwriting rules, discounts, claim experience, territory factors, and product structures. Two quotes with the same headline limits may also differ in endorsements or exclusions.

What does bundling mean?

Bundling usually means placing more than one policy with the same carrier, such as home and auto. Some carriers offer multi-policy discounts, but the best overall value depends on the complete package.

What is an umbrella policy?

A personal umbrella can provide additional liability protection above qualifying underlying policies and may include certain broader liability protection, subject to policy terms and required underlying limits.

Do I need flood insurance if I am outside a high-risk flood zone?

Flooding can occur outside high-risk zones. Standard homeowners policies generally exclude flood, so a separate flood policy may be worth considering based on the property and risk.

What information helps with an insurance quote?

Accurate driver, vehicle, property, business, health-plan, or other exposure information plus current declarations pages usually creates a more useful comparison.

Why should I read the declarations page?

The declarations page summarizes key information such as named insureds, locations, vehicles, limits, deductibles, forms, and premium. It is a useful starting point, although the full policy controls coverage.

Can an agent guarantee a claim will be covered?

No. The carrier evaluates the facts of a claim under the issued policy language. An agent can help explain the process and policy, but cannot guarantee coverage.

When should I call my agent between renewals?

Contact your agent when you move, buy or sell property, add a driver, purchase a vehicle, renovate, start or change a business, sign a contract with insurance requirements, retire, or experience another major change.
